Cross Docking Transload

R+L Global Logistics, through a vast network of locations, is are able to accommodate a variety of needs for clients including cross docking and transload services. And while the two services are somewhat different in nature the end result is the same; getting the shipment to the destination.

Here is an overview of each service and how they work:

CROSS DOCKING

Cross Docking – is when freight arrives at the dock, is unloaded from the inbound truck or rail container and quickly moved to then be reloaded in an outbound truck or rail car.

TRANSLOAD

Transload – involves unloading freight from the inbound mode of transportation to another outbound vehicle to make the final leg of the journey.

When deciding to use either cross docking or transload services, the overall supply chain should be considered to ensure everything remains on time. Shippers using either service must provide accurate schedules for inbound and outbound freight so warehouse space and resources can be allocated appropriately.

Warehouse Services

Companies looking to secure cross docking services typically need freight to arrive at the warehouse and leave again within a relative short amount of time. A warehouse facility offering wide ranging services adds value to clients by fulfilling a variety of needs.

Cross docking and transloading services may be coupled with other warehouse options to include inventory management and storage space.

An additional feature for transloading is the ability for the warehouse to accommodate freight arriving via one mode of transportation, say a railcar and ultimately leave the dock in a different vehicle such as a truck.

The right warehouse needs to have the flexibility and space to meet the needs of various customers throughout the course of a day or week. The service level depends on the client, whether the need is to cross dock a shipment of goods or transload freight from a railcar intended for final distribution to different locales.

The goal is to get everything processed through the warehouse in a timely fashion which helps customers with inventory management. In most cases it’s about finding ways to save time and money when it comes to transportation costs.

Supply Chain

The ability to consolidate inventory based on season, location or demand is one of many attractions to warehousing for companies. It allows for inventory adjustments and quick response time to get freight on the way to customers.

The supply chain is evolving and warehousing plays a huge part in that transformation. Before what could have traditionally taken weeks to do in the more traditional sense, now can happen in a matter of days if not hours. Inbound inventory to a fulfillment and distribution warehouse can literally be processed within hours, repacked and loaded on an outbound truck.

The technology in our warehouses allows customers to keep a tight watch on their supply chain. The key is turnaround time. So it’s possible for an order to come in and be fulfilled the same day or within 24 hours and prepared for shipment.
