The costs of starting an online business are much lower than starting a brick-and-mortar store!

Getting started with online retail isn’t exactly free, but you can expect to pay a lot less upfront than most other business models. Here are some of the expenses you can expect when starting an eCommerce business:

    • Professionally designed website: It can cost between $5,000 to $10,000 to get a website created by a professional. You can save yourself some money if you build a free website with WordPress, but this requires some technical experience.
    • Domain: Domain names are usually only about $2 - $3 a month, but not always. Some people engage in the business of purchasing domain names to sell at a considerable markup, often pricing them at well over $1000. Unless you have your heart set on a domain, make the smart choice, and go for the affordable option.
    • Hosting: Web hosting can be pretty cheap for new websites, and you may not have to pay more than $3 a month. If you anticipate a high volume of traffic from the beginning, you may need to invest in a more robust hosting platform early on, which could cost you anywhere between $20 - $40 a month. The more traffic you have, the more you will have to pay for hosting.

Depending on the size and weight of your packages, the distance the package has to travel, and the type of shipping service selected, each box could cost between $6 (for small boxes shipped through USPS) and $1000 (for large boxes, like furniture, shipped through a courier).

If a product is out of stock, that needs to be reflected in your store. The last thing you want is to have to tell a customer an item is out-of-stock after they’ve already paid.
